Crowns
have been used by dentists for years to either strengthen a tooth
after a large filling, after endodontic treatment or to fix a
broken or chipped tooth.

In the diagram
above, the tooth was broken in Figure 1. In many cases, once
just a 1/4 of the tooth is gone, it is suggested by the dentist to
get that tooth crowned for strength purposes.
In Figure 2 of
the diagram, it illustrates the preparation of the tooth and shows
that it covers the whole tooth. Crowns are made of many different
types of alloys under the porcelain covering or in certain
situations, the dentist might suggest a full gold crown for
durability.
In Figure 3, it
shows a beautiful new crown and a fully restored tooth.
Crowns, if properly maintained, will last many years.
